The Mekong River with Sue Perkins - BBC2 - Researcher

The Mekong is one of the world’s most evocative rivers, but it is under threat from environmental and political pressures. Presenter Sue Perkins, takes on a 4000km journey from the sea in Vietnam to the source, high in the Tibetan mountains to meet the amazing people and communities who call this river home and explore the issues that are putting it under threat. As researcher, (there was no AP on EP 2) I worked mainly on the 2nd and 3rd episode which were focused in Cambodia and Laos. I worked closely with the episode director to research and develop sequence stories and editorial structure as well as overseeing the shoot logistics.

My key responsibilities included

  • Solely responsible for the editorial development of episode 2 based in Cambodia and which focused on environmental issues including illegal wildlife trade and deforestation

  • I conducted a solo recce to find and develop potential storylines, identify engaging characters and contributors and work out shoot logistics. This included finding and developing relationships with indigenous communities

  • Responsible for the shoot set up including scheduling and complex travel logistics.

  • On location I worked closely with the producer to keep the production on track, adjust to any last minute story or logistical changes as well as team management.

  • Worked closely on location with fixers to manage logistics

  • Conducted on location translation when indigenous dialects were involved. This
