In Search of Nomads with Kate Humble - BBC2 - Assistant Producer

This was a three part anthropological series looking at the changing lives of nomadic communities around the world. Over the course of a year, we travelled to the Gobi Desert to live with cashmere goat herders, the forests of Nepal to stay with the Raute Nomads and to Northern Siberia in winter to travel with the Nenet Reindeer herders. Each shoot was approx 5-6 weeks long and was immersive, living and travelling with the families. The production was small with just myself a sound recordist and a self shooting director. As the AP, I saw the production through from development, working closely with the director to manage the logistcs and develop the editorial.

My key responsibilities included

  • Being part of the development team that put together the concept which included in depth research to identify the communities to feature.

  • Working closely with the director to identify storylines, develop the narrative direction and other editorial details.

  • Setting up and managing logistics for all three shoots which were all remote and extremely challenging . This included finding and working with fixers, drawing up travel plans, evacuation procedures, food and accommodation and power supply.

  • Involved delicate access negotiations with tribal communities (one of which had never been filmed for television before) and working closely with local fixers to develop relationships and build trust

  • I handled all scheduling and on location worked to identify potential storylines and characters as well as producing on location translation and data management
